Dr. Jie Yang has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in phonetics, speech science, speech-language development and speech sound disorders. She has worked as a bilingual speech-language pathologist in public schools and private clinics. Additionally, she has received a research grant from the National Science Foundation and has presented at national and international conferences.

Dr. Yang’s research focuses on cross-linguistic investigation of the acquisition of speech production and perception abilities in monolingual and bilingual children. She is especially interested in the development of prosodic characteristics of tone and intonation. Clinically, she is interested in translating this information on normal processes into understanding speech disorders and clinical issues related to populations from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. She employs transcription-based and instrumental/acoustic analysis to understand speech production in typical developing children and children with speech sound disorders.

Dr. Yang received her bachelor’s degree in English from Central South University and her master’s degree in Linguistics from Hunan University in China. She earned her doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2024.
