Dr. Karen Leyva has been a licensed physical therapist since 1994 when she earned her degree in physical therapy from California State University, Long Beach. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the College of St. Scholastica. With more than 30 years of experience in sports and orthopedic physical therapy, her career has included roles such as director of a practice in San Diego, CA and clinical instructor. 

Dr. Leyva earned certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2009 and her certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist in 2017. She is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, frequently serving on the leadership team for the San Diego District California Physical Therapy Association. She is also a member of the American Association of Anatomists and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has a special practice interest in women’s health, focusing on strength and performance across the lifespan. 

Dr. Leyva joined the University of St. Augustine Health Sciences in 2009. She has instructed in courses including gross anatomy, biomechanics, orthopedic patient examination and management of musculoskeletal disorders. USAHS’ Board of Directors recognized Dr. Leyva in 2016 with the inaugural Board Excellence Award for excellence in education.
