San Marcos, CA—March 10, 2015—Certified athletic trainers are on the front lines of preventing and managing sports injuries—making critical decisions for thousands of athletes about player readiness at the high school, college, amateur and professional levels. They face many challenges, including increased awareness and scrutiny of concussions, reams of research to factor into their decision-making and best practices for athletes with a variety of performance levels and abilities.
To advance the knowledge and critical thinking ability of practicing athletic trainers, the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences has fielded a team of recognized experts from across the country for its advisory board as well as contributing faculty to help guide, design and teach its online Master of Health Science in Athletic Training program, which launched in January 2015.
Contributing Faculty
- Leadership and Athletic Training was designed with and is taught by Marjorie Albohm, past president of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association
- Cultural Competence was designed with Corey Oshikoya, assistant athletic trainer for the Denver Broncos
- Sport and Disability was designed with and is taught by Jenna Street, coordinator of the Sports Medicine Volunteer Program Operations for the United States Olympic Committee
- Emergency Athletic Training was designed with and is taught by Richard Bahr, CEO of WMI Global, LLC, which provides emergency medical support at major sporting events around the world
- International Athletic Training was designed with and is taught by Greg Heuer, head freestyle athletic trainer for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association
- Sport and the Female Athlete was designed with and is taught by Toni Torres-McGehee, a member of the Title IX Committee for the NCAA and associate professor at the University of South Carolina
- Concussion in Sport was designed with and is taught by Robb Rehberg, executive director of Sport Safety International and part of the multidisciplinary Center for Concussion Care and Physical Rehabilitation team at Overlook Medical Center
- Evidence-Based Injury Prevention is taught by Jonathan Warren, a physical therapist and former physiotherapist for the New Zealand’s national rugby team, and Dr. Christopher Ivey, a physical therapist and team athletic trainer for the Temecula Valley Predators amateur football team
- Ethico-Legal Issues in Athletic Training was designed with and is taught by Jeff Konin, professor at the University of Rhode Island
Advisory Board
- Jeff Hopp chairs the Georgia Concussion Coalition and has worked for the Minnesota Vikings, an NFL Europe team, the 1996 summer Olympics, 2007 National Paralympic Track and Field Championships, and in leadership roles for the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association
- Chad Krawiec is an athletic trainer for Harvard University’s men’s ice hockey, swimming and diving teams
- Damien Clement from West Virginia University is a frequent presenter on sport and exercise psychology
- Kelley Henderson is the clinical education coordinator in the Florida Gulf Coast University Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
